The Full-Time Programme
The Montessori Pre-primary Teacher Training programme is offered as a full-time course, which runs over 12months. It offers an excellent combination of hands-on practical experience with theory, resulting in personal growth and skills for life. Each of the 6 modules is composed of a minimum time of 40 hours of theory and practical. In addition, students are required to spend a minimum of 100 hours of practice with each module and undertake observations at a number of ECD sites. Students are provided with a list of schools on request. Every year classes commence in the month of February, and dates for the rest of the course are provided on the first day. Classes are held during the week, Monday to Friday from 08h30 – 14h00. Students are required to complete a one term internship after the completion of the academic phase, in a Montessori preschool environment. The centre will assist you in finding a suitable site for your internship (module 7).
The Part-Time Programme
The Part-time programme is similar to the Part-time programme in every respect except: This programme runs over 24 months. Classes take place on Saturday mornings. Students are required to complete a one term internship after the completion of the academic phase, in a Montessori preschool environment. The centre will assist you in finding a suitable site for your internship (module 7).
The Correspondence Course makes it possible for those with other commitments to engage in a comprehensive study of Montessori theory and educational philosophy, the methodology and an overview of other important educational philosophies. On enrolling for the distance learning course, you are assigned a designated tutor who offers you support throughout the course. If you allocate approximately 10 hours per week, you should be able to complete all assignments and portfolios within 1 year. (Note: you must complete all course work within 18 months of registration). As an integral part, a minimum of 3 Directed Observations are necessary for the completion of the course. The precise directions and sequence for these various observations are to be found, together with the assignments, in your Study Notes. Please read them before attempting an observation! A ten day (80 hours) compulsory workshop will be held in June for all students who have completed a minimum of 50% of assignments. Initially the workshop will be held in Cape Town with possible satellite workshops in other parts of the country and Africa once there is adequate demand. Other workshops in your area during the course of your study are recommended for your training, but are not mandatory for this programme. Additional workshops and seminars are offered by the ELF centre throughout the year. A detailed timetable may be emailed to you on request. When you have successfully completed the Academic Component, the Teaching Practical component, the compulsory 80 hours workshops, the practical and written examinations and the compulsory practice hours with the materials you will be awarded the National Diploma ECD Level 5: 23118. The Diploma has to be completed within three years of your initial registration.
